About Jemayne…

Jemayne Lavar King, a native of Franklin, Virginia is a member of Sigma Tau Delta English Honor Society, and Delta Epsilon Iota Academic Honor Society. Jemayne’s first poem Richard Morgan Flier was published in 2002, followed by books Sole Food: Digestible Sneaker Culture, Life Within the Dorm: and Other College Related Poems, Managing Relationships: Bridging the Communication Divide, and 20 First Dates: The Poetic Mixtape. Jemayne is the creator of the world’s first collegiate English course dedicated to identification within Sneaker Culture.

Professor King holds a Bachelor of Arts in English/News Media from Elizabeth City State University, and a Master of Arts in English/Literature from Virginia State University. He is currently a candidate for a PhD in Literary Criticism at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. In 2014, King became an ambassador for the American Heart Association, when he won the organization’s Lifestyle Change Award. A member of the United States Press Association and the National Association of Black Journalists, Jemayne serves as Producer/Co-Host of The Gentleman and The Jerk Podcast via the A Plus Entertainment Group. Jemayne resides in Charlotte, North Carolina where he serves as Title III Activities Co-Director and lectures as an English/Communications Arts professor at Johnson C. Smith University.

Title: The Revolution will be Subtweeted: The Evolving Face of Pedagogy
Description: My talk addresses the fact the Academy can not continue to exist in its current state. New school scholars require new school engagement. Traditionalists should consider the desires of the 21st century scholar regarding curriculum development.
What would the news headline about your talk? Leader of the New School aims to Upset the Pedagogical Applecart
What do you want people to learn from your talk? In order to save Higher Education, traditional methods of pedagogy should be modified to fit the learning styles and career desires of the 21st century scholar.
What action items do you want people to take away from your talk? 1) I want people to know that the storms of change are brewing o’er the Academy. 2) I want people to know that the eye of the storm is currently in Charlotte, NC. 3) I want people to know that resistance to this change is futile.

Where is your hometown? Franklin, VA
What are your hobbies? My hobbies include, but are not limited to: High Intensity Cardio Exercise, Gaming, Reading, and All things Sneaker Culture.
What are you passionate about? I’m passionate about self-improvement and inspiring others.
What is the best compliment you’ve received? One day at the outset of a semester, my department chair asked if I would be willing to accept an overload class. After I accepted, she told me that the class started in 5 minutes and that I should hurry to its location. Each student enrolled had no idea who the professor would be. When I entered the class, 32 students rose to their feet and gave me an ovation.
What do you want to be remembered for? I would like to be remembered for radically changing the staunch tradition of the Academy and for being undefeated for life in Konami’s Blades of Steel.
How do you push the boundaries? I push the boundaries daily by merely existing.
What does your happy place look like? My happy place looks like a marked off regulation soccer pitch or football field littered with drill cones and 77 degree overcast weather.
What is one thing that you would like to share that isn’t commonly known about you? It’s not commonly known that absolutely refuse to eat crawdads (crayfish).

Thoughts on Charlotte…

What part of town do you live in? East Charlotte
What draws you to Charlotte? I’m drawn to Charlotte by It’s southern charm wrapped in an urban exterior.
Where do you see Charlotte in 5 years? I see Charlotte attracting Major league Soccer and Baseball while avoiding the logistical
problems of cities like Atlanta, GA.
