About Damien Akelman…

 Damien Akelman is an Instructional Coach at Mooresville High School, outside of Charlotte. He received his B.A. from UNC Charlotte in 2011 and M.A. from Appalachian State in 2017. Since 2011 he has been teaching students and educators across the country ways to implement technology into the classroom. In his work, he has seen the transformation of education as a result of technology. When his glasses aren’t glued to a screen, he spends time with his children, watching baseball, or listening to a podcast. He is currently working on his administrative license so he can continue to impact students and teachers.

Title: The Internet Should Be Free

Description: What would your life look like without the internet? American ingenuity has been subsidized by the government from the very beginning of our nation. We should continue that trend by finding ways to provide high-speed internet to the residents of Charlotte.

What do you want people to learn from your talk? The importance of community investment in infrastructure that benefits everyone.

What action items do you want people to take away from your talk? Contact state representatives to talk about Charlotte developing a municipal internet service provider to provide internet access to all residents.

Where is your hometown? Charlotte, NC

What are your hobbies? Playing with my kids, teaching, finding good deals, spending other people’s money, advocating for greater equity in education, discussing politics, and laughing.

What are you passionate about? Education, equity, politics, my family, Yankees baseball

What draws you to Charlotte? It’s my home, it is influential in my life. If my life were a book, the city of Charlotte would be a character.

What is the best compliment you’ve received? That I can balance so many projects in my head at the same time. Also, I’m a good T-Ball Coach.

What do you want to be remembered for? Building relationships with kids that guide them through life so they remember the lessons I taught them

How do you push the boundaries? Better to ask forgiveness than permission.

What does your happy place look like? Yankee Stadium with my family, on a sunny day.

What is one thing that you would like to share that is unknown about you? I am fantastic at Mario Kart

Where do you see Charlotte in 5 years? Hopefully, with greater economic mobility and stronger investment in infrastructure.

What animal will be our future overlords? The obvious answer is cats if they can ever agree on a place to lay down.
