Herrison Chicas is a professional Spoken Word Artist from Uniondale, New York. He is currently the Champion of the TEDxUNC Spoken Word Slam, and has been a Finalist in the Slam Charlotte, as well as the Bull City Slam. He was also a semi-finalist in the 2010 Brave New Voices Poetry Slam, and has been a two-time invitee to perform spoken word at TEDx-Charlotte.
Throughout his career, Herrison has performed, collaborated, and competed with renowned artists such as Ed Mabrey, Bluz, Kane Smego, G Yamazawa, Dasan Ahau, and Ernie G. He has also performed at some of the most prestigious universities and poetry venues nationwide, including Duke University, Dartmouth College, and The Nuyorican Café.
Currently, Herrison is continuing to perform Spoken Word around the country, and is continuing to merge poetry across multiple artistic disciplines which include, but are not limited to, music, cinematography, and video animation.
In January of 2014, Herrison and his business partner Manuel Montes launched and successfully completed their first Kickstarter Campaign called “Project Wordography”, raising more than $4,000 of start-up capital to create their first animated poem called “The Climb”.
Herrison graduated from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with Bachelor’s of Arts in Psychology and Sociology on May of 2013.
From 2010 to 2013 Herrison helped established UNC Wordsmiths, one of the first open-mic poetry organizations at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is also an alumni member of UNC’s Sacrificial Poets, one of North Carolina’s most influential poetry organizations serving local youth from elementary school up to the early-college level.
